This is a collection of AI prompts that I’ve found incredibly useful in my teaching practice. I’ve spent a lot of time experimenting with ChatGPT, and over time, it has saved me a ton of effort. This article is a casual walkthrough of some things I’ve tried. It’s not the only way to achieve these results, but rather, a set of examples based on my experiences—so feel free to walk with me through them.
I’ve included screenshots for each prompt to show you what they achieve, along with links to my original ChatGPT/Copilot threads. You can explore these full prompts, copy them, or adjust them however you like.
Here’s what you’ll find in this article:
- Examples for teaching grammar and punctuation
- Examples for structuring PEEL paragraphs
- Explaining a maths word problem step-by-step
- Roleplay: conducting an interview with an ancient Silk Road traveler
- Roleplay: engaging in an ELL bilingual conversation
- Creating bilingual vocabulary lists and matching cloze sheets for character descriptions in novel writing
- Creating Blookets and converting them into CSV format
- Designing cloze sheets and Blookets
- Providing writing practice instructions, rubrics, and exemplars
- Uploading student work images for analysis and feedback suggestions
- Scaffolding narrative writing exercises for ELLs
- Setting language learning objectives and planning ELL lessons with example plans
- Developing an HTML answer checker for tests and quizzes
And as the disclaimer goes:
- Always review the material before implementing it.
- ChatGPT can occasionally make mistakes (especially in maths).
Enough intro—let’s see some prompts!
ChatGPT prompt examples for teaching grammar and punctuation

ChatGPT prompt for explaining a maths word problem step-by-step
- Using ChatGPT in class to learn how to explain a problem to a student.
- This one actually had quite a lot of mistakes I had to manually fix. It still saved me time overall however but highlights the importance of checking.

ChatGPT prompt for creating Blookets and converting them into CSV format
- Helps you to make blookets really quickly without having to copy and paste all the questions and answers manually.

ChatGPT prompt for designing cloze sheets and Blookets
- An example of how you could generate information about a specific topic and then use GPT to create resources around it. In this case, a cloze sheet based on information from Fire NZ about Smoke Alarms, which I then eventually turned into a blooket for a Health unit.
- Thread: https://chatgpt.com/share/70cb6316-ab87-4344-8e75-e8c8d44eaebf
ChatGPT prompt for providing writing practice instructions, rubrics, and exemplars
- An example of using GPT to generate differentiated revision for students who are struggling with an area of learning–in this case, writing. I have seen significant improvement in the writing of students who have been assigned this remedial home learning task.

ChatGPT prompt for uploading student work images for analysis and feedback suggestions
- An example of how ChatGPT can analyze files or images to provide feedback. Be aware of copyright laws when uploading files. In this example, I uploaded an image of one of my student’s persuasive essay introductory paragraphs for analysis. It was also able to provide me with a transcript.
- To upload files/images use the attach file button on the bottom left corner of the text input box.
- The number of files you can upload is limited per day. The paid version of ChatGPT allows more, but is also limited.
ChatGPT prompt for scaffolding narrative writing exercises for ELLs
- Providing bilingual vocab lists for describing characters, feelings, and settings
- Providing bilingual elements of the story and examples for story planning
- Thread: https://chatgpt.com/share/1864efd1-fea6-4b24-942c-0bceafc569f7
ChatGPT prompt for setting language learning objectives and planning ELL lessons with example plans
- I used GPT to provide an LLO for an ELL lesson, suggest resources, and also to provide an example of what the lesson could look like as a starting point for my lesson planning.
- Thread: https://chatgpt.com/share/68c6d7ab-b758-4b59-960a-f9e062b809dc
AI prompt for developing an HTML answer checker for tests and quizzes
- I used Copilot to create an HTML answer checker with textboxes for students to enter in answers for questions on a Cantamaths type test which I gave to some advanced learners for extension.
- I couldn’t give them an answer sheet because the test required them to get a question correct before moving on to the next question.
- The html page allowed students to input their answers at their own pace and receive instant feedback on whether they got the question right or wrong, which freed me up to teach the rest of the class.
- This can be finicky and may require a bit of tweaking
